What's underfoot decides how we do it. Faywood is the dominant soil under Walton, and it's only moderately deep, limestone bedrock at 20 to 40 inches under a silty clay subsoil, so cuts go clayey fast and then hit rock. That flips our approach: instead of cutting fall into a Walton lot, we usually build it up with fill placed in compacted lifts. Nicholson on the gentler ridgetops adds the familiar fragipan that perches winter water, and Eden on the steep breaks near the creek heads is documented as subject to much slippage, so fills out there get compacted and drained, never just shaped and left.

Walton also sits at the top of the water. The town rides its ridge at about 902 feet, the highest point on the corridor between Cincinnati and Louisville, and Banklick Creek rises in the rural ground nearby, so this is headwater country where runoff leaves fast instead of soaking in. A graded pad or drive up here sheds water within seconds of a storm starting, and the grade alone decides where it goes.
