When you need us
A gully that grows every storm
A rill becomes a rut becomes a trench. Once water has a channel it concentrates there, so every rain cuts faster than the last one. Gullies never fix themselves, they just get more expensive to fix.
The creek is getting closer
Banks never erode away from your property. If high water is undercutting a bank near your driveway, yard, or outbuilding, the distance between them only shrinks, and the sooner we armor it the smaller the job.
Cracks or bulges on a slope
A curved crack across a hillside, a leaning fence line, or a bulge at the toe means the ground itself is moving, not just the surface. On our shale slopes that's the early warning of a slip, and it calls for drainage and regrading now.
Mud where it shouldn't be
Topsoil on the walk, silt in the ditch, straw in the neighbor's yard. Disturbed ground sheds until it's stabilized, and on an active site that runoff can turn into a compliance problem as fast as a cleanup problem.

What moves the number
We quote after a site walk, not from a satellite photo. These are the honest variables.
How much water shows up
A slope catching its own rain and a slope catching forty acres of runoff are different problems. The size of the area draining to the trouble spot drives pipe, swale, and rock sizing more than anything else.
Slope steepness and access
Gentle ground a skid steer can walk is quick work. A 2 to 1 bank that needs an excavator working from the top takes more machine time, and tight access can mean smaller equipment and more of it.
Rock tonnage and trucking
Rip rap is priced by the ton and moved by the truckload. Our own 14-truck fleet hauls it, which takes the third-party trucking markup out of the number.
How far the damage has run
A young gully gets filled, compacted, and rerouted in a day. A bank that's been cutting for ten years needs rebuilding from a stable base up. Early calls are always the cheaper ones.
Working in or near water
Creek bank jobs get planned around flow. Low-water windows, temporary crossings, and keeping sediment out of the stream all take more care than dry-land work.
The finish on top
Some jobs end at the rock. Others need topsoil, seed, straw, or erosion blankets to put the disturbed ground back green, and that restoration rides on the same quote.

Rock it or grow it?
Almost every erosion fix comes down to two tools: armor the ground with stone or rebuild it and get it growing. Both work. Picking the right one for each part of the slope is what makes the fix last.
Regrade and vegetate
Best for: Gentler grades and sheet flow: yards, long open slopes, and disturbed ground where water spreads out instead of concentrating.
The trade: The cheapest and best-looking fix, but grass needs a season to root and won't survive concentrated flow. Past about 3 to 1 it needs blanket help, and past 2 to 1 it's the wrong tool.
Rip rap armor
Best for: Ditch lines, culvert outlets, creek banks, slope toes, and anywhere water concentrates and hits hard.
The trade: More per foot, and it's rock, not lawn. But it protects the day it's placed, works in any season, and doesn't care how hard it rains.

We walk the slope during or after rain whenever we can. Where the water starts, where it speeds up, and where it lands tells us what the fix has to be.

You get a straight answer on what will hold and what would just be an expensive bandage. If a wall or a drain is the honest fix, we'll say so.

Excavators and dozers cut the slope, the swales, and the bank back to a grade that works with the water instead of against it.

Rip rap, stone, and compacted fill go in where flow will keep hitting. Our trucks haul every load, so there's no waiting on a rock delivery from someone else.

Seed and straw on the disturbed ground, because rooted grass is the cheapest erosion control ever invented and the last step of every job we finish.
Silt fence and small rock jobs usually run a day. A typical slope regrade or gully repair takes two or three days including the stone and the seeding, and a long creek bank rebuild can run a week depending on access. Two honest scheduling notes: bank work goes best at low water in late summer and fall, and that's also when seed takes best in Kentucky, with spring a workable second window. Rock, on the other hand, works in any season, so an urgent washout never has to wait on the calendar.

Erosion work takes iron and rock in the same week, and we have both. Built for Kentucky ground
Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky have been called the landslide capital of the United States, and the reason sits under every hillside we work. The Kope Formation, the bedrock beneath most of these slopes, is roughly 75 percent soft shale, and it weathers into a clay-rich colluvium that blankets the hills of Grant, Kenton, and Boone counties. That clay is strong when it's dry and loses strength fast when it's wet. Give it 43 to 45 inches of rain a year plus a winter of freeze and thaw working water into every exposed face, and you get slopes that erode grain by grain until one wet spring they move all at once.
The ridgetops feed the problem in a way people miss. Soils like Nicholson and Rossmoyne carry a dense fragipan a couple feet down, so winter rain can't soak away; it perches, saturates the topsoil, and sheds off lot edges straight onto the slope crests below. That's why our erosion work starts uphill of the damage: collect the roof and surface water and pipe it past the slope, lay the grade back, armor where the flow concentrates, and put the rest back to grass. Rock without drainage is a bandage on this ground. You have to do both.
Questions we hear a lot
How do I stop erosion on a steep hillside?
Start with the water, not the dirt. Runoff needs a controlled path (a swale, a ditch, or pipe), the slope needs a grade it can hold, and the surface needs cover, either rooted grass or rock. We usually combine all three, because any one alone tends to fail at the weakest point.
What is rip rap and where should it be used?
Rip rap is large, angular stone placed where flowing water would otherwise strip the soil: creek banks, ditch lines, culvert outlets, and the base of slopes. The stones lock together and break up the water's energy. We size the rock to the flow, haul it with our own trucks, and place it with machines, not by the bucket-and-hope method.
Can you repair a creek bank that is washing out?
Yes. We cut the bank back to a stable slope, rebuild it with compacted material, and armor the face with rip rap so high water rolls past instead of digging in. The sooner you call, the smaller the fix. Banks never erode toward the creek.
Will planting grass alone fix my erosion problem?
On gentle grades with sheet flow, often yes, and it's the cheapest fix there is. On steep ground or anywhere water concentrates, seed washes out before it roots. That's when the slope needs to be regraded, drained, or rocked first. We'll tell you which situation you have before you spend money on the wrong one.
Do you install silt fence for construction sites?
We do. We set silt fence and construction-entrance stone for our own site work and for builders who need containment on disturbed ground. Since we also handle the grading and the final seed and straw, one call covers the site from first cut to established grass.
How much does erosion control cost?
It ranges widely because a ditch-line rock job and a full creek bank rebuild are different animals. We walk the site, find where the water is actually coming from, and quote the whole fix up front, including the trucking, since the rock rides in on our own fleet.
What is the difference between erosion control and drainage?
Two halves of one problem. Drainage gives water a controlled route; erosion control protects the ground the water touches. Most slopes that are washing need both, which is why the same crew here runs the pipe, cuts the grade, and places the rock instead of splitting the fix across contractors.
How steep of a slope can grass hold?
Up to about a 3 to 1 slope, grass establishes and holds well on its own. At 2 to 1 it needs erosion blankets and water routed away from it to survive long enough to root. Steeper than that, vegetation alone won't hold, and the honest fix is regrading, rock, or a wall.
Why do hillsides slip in Northern Kentucky?
Blame the bedrock. Most of our slopes sit on the Kope Formation, a shale-heavy rock that weathers into clay. That clay blanket is stable dry and weak wet, so a saturated winter, a cut at the toe, or extra weight up top can start it moving. It's why this region has a national reputation for landslides, and why we take slope water so seriously.
When is the best time of year for erosion control work?
Rock and grading work happens year round. Creek bank jobs go smoothest at low water in late summer and fall, and fall is also Kentucky's best seeding window, so that stretch is prime time. The worst plan is waiting through another winter, because wet-season damage compounds.
Do I need a retaining wall or erosion control?
If the ground has to stand steeper than soil naturally can, or you need to keep every foot of flat yard, that's a wall. If the slope can be laid back, drained, and armored, erosion control is usually the simpler money. Plenty of jobs pair the two, and since we build both, you get one honest answer instead of two sales pitches.
