Erosion Control for Union Lots and the Gunpowder Watershed

Union has the youngest housing stock in Boone County. The median home dates to 2005, nearly nine in ten are owner occupied, and building continues, with subdivisions still going in along US 42, KY 536, and KY 237 and the Union Promenade town center that broke ground on US 42 in 2022. Young neighborhoods mean young lawns, and young lawns on freshly graded ground are exactly where erosion gets its start.

The short answer

We provide erosion control throughout Union, KY: washing slopes behind new homes, gullies under downspouts, rip rap, and sediment control that keeps dirt out of Gunpowder Creek. Union is roughly 15 road miles from our Crittenden yard via I-75 and KY 536. Call 859-910-9272 and we'll come look.

The ground underneath doesn't help. Union's broad ridges sit on Rossmoyne, a loess cap over old glacial till with a fragipan about two feet down. Winter and spring rain perches on that pan instead of soaking through, so saturated topsoil sends water across yards and over the lot edges, where the slopes flip to clayey Faywood and Jessup ground running down toward branches of Gunpowder Creek. A downspout dumped at the top of one of those long back slopes can cut a gully in a season or two, well before the grass is mature enough to argue.

And in Union, what washes off your lot has an address. The city was a named partner in the watershed plan that got Gunpowder Creek off Kentucky's impaired waterways list in 2022, a decade of stormwater work worth protecting, so sediment control here is taken seriously. We're roughly 15 road miles from our Crittenden yard, up I-75 to exit 178 and west on Mt Zion Road, and the same crew handles the drainage, the regrade, the rock, and the seed.

What makes Union ground different

A creek the town helped clean

Gunpowder Creek came off the impaired list in 2022 after a decade of regional stormwater work, with Union at the table. Controlling erosion on your lot keeps that win intact, and keeps disturbed-ground projects on the right side of scrutiny.

Pan ground under new lawns

Rossmoyne's fragipan leaves flat yards soggy through spring and pushes runoff over the edges. Routing downspouts to daylight before the washing starts is the cheapest erosion control a Union homeowner can buy.

Long slopes on big lots

Grass holds on its own up to about a 3 to 1 grade. Union's large lots carry longer, steeper mowed slopes than that behind plenty of homes, and those need blankets, swales, or rock at the bottom to stay put.

Erosion Control in Union: your questions

Why does my new lawn in Union wash out every spring?

Because the ground under it can't drink. The fragipan in Union's Rossmoyne soil perches winter rain near the surface, so spring storms run across saturated ground and carry young grass with them. Piping downspouts to daylight, regrading, and blanketing the steep spots usually ends it.

Can you stabilize the slope behind my house in Union, KY?

Yes. We lay the grade back to an angle it can hold, intercept the water feeding it from above, armor the toe and any channels with rock, and put the face back to grass.

Do you handle sediment control for builders in Union?

We do. Silt fence, entrance stone, and quick stabilization of disturbed ground, plus the finish grading and seeding at the end. Gunpowder Creek was delisted in 2022, and jobs here are expected to keep their dirt on site.

How much does erosion control cost in Union, KY?

A gully reroute and a full slope rebuild are very different tickets, so the honest answer starts with a site walk. What we promise is one number for the entire fix, trucking included, since the rock arrives on our own fleet.
