The reason is usually written in the soil. Florence's flat ground is Rossmoyne, loess over glacial till with a fragipan about two feet down, and the county soil survey notes many wet spots in the built-up areas here because water perches on that pan instead of soaking through. Perched water is exactly what loaded those old walls, and the survey's other flag, shrink-swell clay in the lower layers, is what kept pushing on them between storms. Out on the western edges where the draws cut toward Gunpowder Creek's headwaters, the mapping flips to Eden, a soil documented as subject to much slippage, so walls near those breaks get benched cuts, geogrid where the height calls for it, and drainage as the first line item.
There's new work coming too. The city's 2024 economic development report counted 20 projects underway, Florence has flagged a housing shortage, and the long-term Mall Road redevelopment points at years of teardown and regrade activity, the kind of commercial sites where grade-separation walls earn their keep. We're roughly 17 to 18 road miles from our Crittenden yard straight up I-75, and one crew covers the demo, the hauling, the wall, and the grade.
